Be Still and Know
-“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” - Psalm 46:10
We are all busy these days, sometimes whether we want to be or not. We are in a constant frenzy to do, be and move. We must work, we must plan, we must try, we must be ready, we must resolve, we must fix. Yet inevitably somehow, little gets done, plans fail, our trying doesn’t accomplish, we’re never fully ready, there’s no resolution and something is still broken. We often find ourselves feeling exhausted and defeated. What should we do when we can’t do anything about our circumstances? Some turn to artificial comfort (alcohol, drugs, sex, even food), but these can be addictive and cause irreparable harm to us and our loved ones. We turn to these things because we feel hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. It’s no wonder that the acronym used for addiction recovery and prevention is HALT- stop and think about your action first. It makes sense, since the Psalms gave us this prescription long ago. Psalm 46 says, “Be still.” When life gets tough or circumstances are overwhelming we should just stop, stand still and remember who is really in control. God already has the solution. His plan is already in motion. And we don’t have to be able to see it. After all, we can’t always see the sun, but don’t we expect to see it sooner or later? Why can’t we trust that we may not always see God in our lives, but we are assured that He is always there? We should realize that he is God, the Almighty, All-knowing, Always present, All-powerful One. He is more than the unbelief, more than anything or anyone on earth. Let’s just stop and rest assured that our Great Creator has got us in every situation. Know that. The Psalm starts and ends with these words, “God is our refuge.” All we have to do is accept his protection. Let Him be our sanctuary. Pray and seek answers from His word. Wait patiently for His plan to unfold. He promises that his plan will be accomplished and all will be well.
